WebChiselmouth are morphologically and ecologically unique in Canada because they are the only western species exclusively adapted to herbivory as adults. They are ecologically unique from eastern herbivorous cyprinids ( e.g. Campostoma) because of their much larger size and unique chisel-like lower lip and foraging mode. WebChiselmouth are a coolwater cyprinid, and it is likely that minimal thermal thresholds for development and growth at different life stages (eggs, juvenile, adult growth and gonad development) limit the distribution of the species in B.C., although it is unclear which particular life stage may be limiting.
